Networked Communications

Updated: May 4, 2021

Not many parts of What Happened to Wednesday touched the topic of network communication, but there was a very large presence of political impact and advertising online. In the world that is built within the film, the large population has led to various world issues including increased pollution, lack of food, and more. To combat this, the government has instilled laws so that families were only allowed to have one child. This meant that any siblings that were born were expected to be given to the government to be put into a CryoSleep until a time came when the world could handle a bigger population.

Throughout the movie, various types of advertisements were seen that promoted this idea. It was pushed onto the people to believe that anyone who tried to keep their children was selfish and should be looked down on. The government used different media platform such as the news and social media to promote these ideas, and that what they were doing was the best for the children involved. At the end of the movie, we find out that all of this was done to cover up the truth behind the government’s actions. They used the media to promote how this process would benefit all those involved, but they were killing all the children who were turned in or taken. This was a major breach of trust to the people under the government as for years they had persuaded them through propaganda that what they were doing was the right thing.

Much of the rest of their network communication is through the government issues bracelet. These bracelets were used for a variety of information transfer, such as messages, video files, and documents. The bracelets were also used as a key pass to get into each section of the city. They used the technology for a majority of their day to day life, and it led all of the communication they shared with each other.
